Week 12 Bump Update! *Ultrasound Week*
This week has been the most testing week thus so far. On Thursday Nov 22nd we attended our first ultrasound. Given the circumstances and past history of miscarriages (2 prior - 1 natural early MC and 1 Missed MC) we were very nervous going in and very much prepared for any bad news. The reality being that the fetus had no heartbeat (which is what happened last November). Our names were called into the ultrasound tech room and we walked in followed by the tech. She asked me to lay on the table and expose my tummy, she then began the ultrasound and the room went very quiet. This of course freaked me out and I looked over to my husband to reassurance but had no expression (personally I don't think he knew himself what he was looking at) The tech said "heres the heartbeat". We both were grinning from ear to ear then she said "oh here's another heartbeat, looks like you have two in there!" SHOCKED! how could there be two? We don't have twins in either of our families... it was a big surprise.
Unfotunatly our joy was short-lived as the tech said that the babies are not the same size, the smaller one is about a week smaller in gestational age and seems to have a thick nuchal fold, the babies also are sharing a placenta and seem to be in a shared sac - making them Monoamniotic-Monochorionic. With mo/mo twins (short for Monoamniotic-Monochorionic) they are the highest risk pregnancy you can have in twins. Only 1% in twin pregnancies are this type. Along with this issue arrives a whole host of risks:
We have now been referred to a specialist, and our next appointment will provide us with options and more insight as to what can be done. We are in for a difficult and long journey with our little ones.
How far along? 12.3 weeks
Total weight gain: I look about 4-5 months pregnant which is pretty normal for twin pregnancies
Maternity clothes? Not yet, but i might need to get some very soon.
Stretch marks? nothiing as of yet
Sleep: sleeping is horrible... I've been sleeping on my left side to improve my circulation to the babies and I'm simply not used to sleeping on this side.
Best moment this week: Being told we're having twins :)
Miss anything? Sleeping on my tummy ... so comfy.
Movement: I think I've been feeling movement since week 11 (which I heard is common in twins) I simply thought it was my imagination.
Food cravings: chocolate milk
Anything making you queasy or sick: Morning sickness is not as bad anymore and not really an issue.
Gender: :-( noooo but after looking at the ultrasound photos I think they are girls.
Labor signs: No.
Symptoms: Lightheaded and feeling dizzy
Belly button in or out? In!
Wedding rings on or off? on
Happy or moody most of the time: nervous and on edge.. given the circumstances I'd say this is to be expected.
Looking forward to: Being told there is nothing serious with my babies and something can be done to better my chances and their chances of survival.
Twin A (upside down and laying on tummy)
Twin B (jumping around very fiesty)
